I was recently selected to be a signature member of the American Society of Landscape Painters. I am honored to be part of this great group. The organization exists to promote the rich history and tradition of landscape painting and to promote fine landscape art as well. If you get a chance, click on the link below to visit their website.

At work in my new studio

I haven't posted in awhile because my wife and I have been moving into a new home and I have been unpacking in my new studio. I am enjoying working in my new studio and I have some great rural landscapes right in my backyard that I can't wait to paint. Right now I am using a room inside the house for my studio, but hope to build a separate building on our property to use as a studio in the future. I better get painting so I can afford to build it!
These pictures are of a painting in progress on my easel. It is a scene from a lavender farm I visited last summer. I am painting it on gallery wrap canvas that has extra thick sides with no staples. The sides will be painted in black acrylic so the painting can be hung without a frame for a finished contemporary look. I will post a picture of the finished piece when I get it done. Ok, back to the easel!

Perfume Bottle Study
7" x 5" Acrylic on Panel
$35 unframed
Update: SOLD
This is part of a series of small paintings I do regularly to keep my hand and eye sharp. I usually do more of these in the winter when the weather is a bit too chilly for outdoor painting. My subjects for these postcard size paintings are usually everyday objects found around the house... in this case it was an empty perfume bottle found on my wife's dresser.

Happy New Year!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Just wanted to wish all my friends and collectors a happy new year. I will not be posting as much to the blog this month because my wife and I are in the process of moving to a new home and renting out our current house, so I will be busy with non-art stuff for the next few weeks.
I will be sure to post my new works when I have my new studio up and running. Thanks again to all of those who support my work.

Studio Clearance Sale
5" x 5" Acrylic on Canvas
Painted on location in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee.
Studio Clearance Sale on Ebay
I will be having a clearance sale on Ebay starting tomorrow. These will be non-exhibition works 8 x 10 and smaller that I need to get rid of. Most of them are quick studies like the painting above or sketches that I decided didn't make the cut to be sold at the gallery or on my website. A lot of the pieces were studies for larger gallery pieces. Just search the word "Holdren" from the Ebay home page to see the auctions. They will all start at $3.00 with no reserve. I will start listing them tomorrow.

Summer Day
10" x 8" Oil on Canvas Panel
SOLD
This is a small piece I did the other day in the studio from an acrylic sketch I did on location this past summer. This is the driveway on my inlaws property near their pond. The sketch I worked from was done this past summer on a clear day with the sunlight streaming through the trees. It was a great day.

Infinity Farm Plein Air Barn Sale

I participated in a plein air sale this past weekend at Infinity Farm in Efland, NC. The artists painted the surrounding scenery and the barn was converted into a gallery for the day. We had a great turnout and I sold a few paintings and just enjoyed the great music and food. Above are some pics of the barn as it was being set up, and a shot of my art on the wall, and the first shot is the plein air painting I did near the pond. As you can see it is still attached to my easel because I was too lazy too take it off. Enjoy the pictures!

My travel setup for painting
Some have asked what my outdoor painting setup looks like. Above is the setup I use when I travel. It is my lightweight setup which consists of a painting box made from a modified cigar box and it mounts to a tripod. This setup is great for lightweight travel and I can paint on sizes up to 8" x 10" with this box, which is usually the only size I have time for when I travel. When I am closer to home, I use a Full sized French Easel, which is basically a sketchbox that holds all my supplies that folds out into an easel. I can use really large canvases with that setup but the downside is that it is heavier and more cumbersome to set up. I will try to post a pic of that setup as well.
